Located in very close proximity to the National Theatre Ivan Vazov, Theatre 199 is a small but significant stage for the Bulgarian theatrical performers.
Theatre 199 was established in 1965 and was given this name due to the 199 seats it had at that time.
Theatre 199 does not have its own cast. It hosts only visiting actors and directors.
Instead of relying on classical plays, Theatre 199 “bets” on a programme that gives a chance to younger actors and directors. This is incredibly successful and helpful for the new generation of Bulgarian artists, as the greatest modern Bulgarian plays and actors have went on the theatre’s stage.
Theatre 199 is also home to the Bulgarian version of Hollywood’s Walk of Fame, wherethe handprints of the best Bulgarian actors and directors can be seen in concrete.
