Saint Sofia Statue

As the patron saint of Bulgaria’s capital, St. Sofia to this day watches over the city.

The statue to St. Sofia is located across from Batenberg Square, where almost all of the government buildings are.
The statue is the work of local sculptor Georgi Chapkanov and replaced the statue of Lenin, which stood on the same spot during the communist period.

The statue itself is 24 meters tall and made of bronze. It depicts St. Sofia (“wisdom” in Greek) holding an owl in her left hand and a laurel wreath in her right hand.
