The man called “the father of Bulgarian literature”, Ivan vazov requested to be buried in the park behind St. Sofia church. His funeral was both a national tragedy and a great procession. The monument itself is a monolith brought from the nearby mountain Vitosha. This type of monoliths have been shaped by melting gleisurs and are very dear to Bulgarians. The grave has not been touched since 1921 and is covered by a thick “blanket” of flowers.
