The Doctor’s monument was built in honor of the fallen medics of the Russian-Turkish war for the liberation of the Bulgarian state. The monument’s construction was finished in 1884 as a project of architects Antonyi Tomishko and Luigi Farabosco.

The Doctor’s monument is located in the center of the Doctor’s garden. The structure itself consists of a four-sided plinth bearing the names of 529 doctors and nurses, which became casualties of the war, on each side. Atop the monument sits a sarcophagus, in which, the names of the places, where the battles of the greatest scale were fought, are etched on each side –  Pleven, Plovdiv, Shipka and Mechka. The Doctor’s monument used to have four bronze wreaths on each side but they were stolen twice in the 90’s.

The Doctor’s monument and the Doctor’s garden sit on top of an abandoned Turkish graveyard. Maybe this is why locals decided that the place is great for Halloween parties?
